It's fantastic and since I don't enjoy cooking at all, but will use this because it's Green, is so perfect for us. They're made and sold by the non-profit Solar Oven Society that provides cheap or free ovens to women in developing countries so that they don't have to spend their whole day scrounging around for sparse wood; instead, they can get a job or create products for sale while their food cooks, the only energy being used is the free sun!

http://www.solarovens.org/

Been a busy few days - my PhD viva went very well yesterday - I passed my viva with minor revisions and in about 4 weeks, I'll have the PhD. The readers were great - want me to publish immediately (!) - will help, since I've not published anything since 2003 except online archaeology reports. Otherwise, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Mary Rose, Royal Naval Museum, Imperial War Museum, British Museum, British Library, Petrie Museum, UCL, City of London Museum, Docklands Museum, Hyde Park, a bit of Kensington and Notting Hill, Greenwich Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark Restoration, HMS Belfast, and bunches of other stuff. Home on Sunday to begin final re-arrangement of PhD to get it done ASAP!

We've been in London about 9 hours, having passed out for a couple with a little jet lag. Wonderful fly-over of Central London prior to landing at Heathrow - could even pick out all my favorite outdoor haunts. A bit rainy, but supposed to be a bit nicer tomorrow for a "get-re-acquainted" walk around town. Probably won't even see my Dissertation supervisor until just before my Viva on Wednesday. My hubby and I are both having separation anxiety over taking our kitties to my mom's and actually LEAVING them there for over a week...aaarrrgghhhh!!! We called her 4 times in 12 hours prior to leaving home and she refused to use e-mail, so I'm relying on my sister to call her to check up on our babies and then she can e-mail us. Our cell doesn't work here and it's very annoying, since I checked on this before we left and they said "Hey, no problem!"

OK, enough of that. Glad to be in London!

To My London and UK Friends -

Question: can we, as foreigners, buy an Oyster Card at Heathrow Airport through a machine or from a tube teller window (the Oyster web site says non-UK residents can't buy Oyster cards in London except at Gatwick or online before arrival)? I purchased one online from VisitBritain in NYC - $20 for a £10.00 card (and the £2.00 card fee is acceptable, of course) that with the exchange rate is really worth about £14.50 but only has a £10.00 value - but what really sticks in my britches is the $11 FedEx shipping charge that we couldn't alter to US mail - ridiculously stupid. Now that my husband is joining me in London for the week, we need a second card. Thanks for any help!

just contacted me, asking about the date of 11 March for my PhD defense in London - the date works for me and I hope this means the readers love it, not hate it and think it's crap. They've only had it in hand since early December; don't know if this is good or bad...but my stomach is churning. I really should have defended this about 6-7 years ago, with a lot of crap happening to prevent it, and I really want to get this done, but the reality is making me wouzy. I'll start checking for flights to Heathrow, I guess....bites nails.....

From Susie Madrak on Crooks and Liars:

"So many people can look at this First Family and see themselves. That's a great thing:

From Jodi Kantor - NY Times: WASHINGTON — The president’s elderly stepgrandmother brought him an oxtail fly whisk, a mark of power at home in Kenya. Cousins journeyed from the South Carolina town where the first lady’s great-great-grandfather was born into slavery, while the rabbi in the family came from the synagogue where he had been commemorating Martin Luther King’s Birthday. The president and first lady’s siblings were there, too, of course: his Indonesian-American half-sister, who brought her Chinese-Canadian husband, and her brother, a black man with a white wife."

And I want to add President Obama's roots in Ireland, and his half-brother, half-sister, and stepmother from Kenya, too. Just like the US - a melting pot family. They ARE us!
